Freelance - Comes from the knights whose lances were free for hire and who were not pledged to one master; originally, a freelance was a free companion or a person free of occupational or political party obligation or allegiance.
Freelance -  is a working arrangement when a person sells their services to individual buyers with whom they are not employed.
Freelance -  describes someone who does work for individual buyers.
An example of freelance is a graphic designer doing a job for someone who is not their employer.
